    Erran Baron Cohen is returning to Los Angeles to begin work on The Dictator.

    Directed by Larry Charles and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, the comedy tells the heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy never comes to the country he so lovingly oppressed.





    The Dictator will be released later this year.

    The comedy, directed by Lorene Scafaria, stars Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley as two neighbors who embark on a road trip to find Steve’s high school sweetheart before an incoming asteroid ends all life on Earth



    Jonathan Sadoff and Lorene Scarfaria are in the band The Shortcoats, whose debut EP This Time Last Year is out now.

    Congratulations to Alex Heffes who won Discovery of the Year at the 2011 World Soundtrack Awards for his work on The First Grader and The Rite!

    Also nominated for Discovery of the Year was iZLER, for his scores to The Hammer and Natural Selection. The award is given to emerging film composing talent to commemorate an excellent piece of musical work (click here to read about the nominees).

    The World Soundtrack Awards were held at the Ghent International Film Festival on Saturday, October 22nd. Abel Korzeniowski, the winner of last year’s World Soundtrack Discovery Award, took the stage during the ceremony to perform his award-winning music from A Single Man, which also earned him the Public Choice Award in 2010.

    In addition to Best Original Score, W.E also received a Best Original Song nomination for Masterpiece, by Madonna, Julie Frost, and Jimmy Harry, with a string arrangement by Abel.



    In other Golden Globe news, Boss, scored and music supervised by Brian Reitzell, has been nominated for Best Drama Series. Brian’s minimalist score containing elements of music concrete played a significant role in creating an identity for the series.

    Madonna’s highly anticipated W.E, scored by Abel Korzeniowski, stars Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, and James D’Arcy, depicting the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson alongside a contemporary romance between a married woman and a Russian security guard.

    Take This Waltz, scored by Jonathan Goldsmith, written and directed by Sarah Polley, stars Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, Sarah Silverman and Luke Kirby in a funny, bittersweet and heart-wrenching story about a woman struggling to choose between two different types of love.

    Marc Forster’s biographical thriller Machine Gun Preacher, scored by Thad Spencer (Asche & Spencer), stars Gerard Butler as Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who finds God and becomes a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese child soldiers.

    Also screening at the festival this year are two films from Rob Simonsen, who scored Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best and contributed additional music to Moneyball.

    Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father Hal Fields (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away.
